Soundend MENCAP’s The Music Man Project

Described as Outstanding by OFSTED and commended by the Prime Minister, The Music Man Project provides education, enjoyment and access to inspirational performance opportunities by accessing the innate musicality in everyone, regardless of their learning difficulty or special educational needs. It delivers teaching at weekday sessions and Saturday music schools, and provides comprehensive music services for special schools, colleges and care homes. In 2015 The Music Man Project made its West End debut at the London Palladium, released a charity single and E-book, performed at the first ever Royal Mencap National Conference and was shortlisted at the 2015 Music Teacher Awards for Excellence.

The Music Man Project will provide training, observations and mentoring for Special Schools to help them deliver an effective classroom music curriculum. It will provide resources and teaching strategies to empower teachers to be more confident in delivering day to day music to their pupils. This approach will be sustainable for schools and will lead to enhanced musical outcomes, cross-curricular learning and improved physical, social and communication skills for children. Finally, The Music Man Project will provide effective ways to track and report pupil progress to stakeholders.

The Music Man Project will also help schools prepare their pupils for musical performance and encourage them to make this a regular feature of their learning and school experience. It will offer bespoke resources such a new “school songs” or topic-related repertoire which will help pupil understanding of different curriculum areas in a fun and highly accessible way.
